BP has agreed to share the technical information it used to build its global deepwater well-capping equipment with Pemex of Mexico.
Under a technology licence agreement, the super-major will make available technical information that Pemex can use in addition to initiatives it already has in place, if it decides to build and maintain its own well-capping system for use in Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The emergency well-capping package grew out of the Macondo disaster, which demonstrated how poorly prepared the offshore industry was for this type of incident. The system can operate in some 3,000m (10,000ft) of water and is rated to pressures of 15,000 pounds per square inch.
