The super-drillship Stena Carron continues to grind away at the South Uist deepwater (1,300m) exploration well.
“It’s proving a difficult well to drill. We’re on the fourth sidetrack and we’re drilling ahead,” said BP’s North Sea boss, Trevor Garlick.
“The plan is to try and tap this prospect that we have identified on seismic and which looks enticing. It’s a large structure. By all accounts it should be a porous body in a trap and therefore has a good chance of containing hydrocarbons.
“We want to get to it, we’ve spent eight months to get to it and we’re going to continue.”
Garlick said he thought drilling could take another couple of months, assuming things go to plan; so it might be into the new year before it reaches total depth.
“We’re committed to testing this prospect,” he added.
