Total has inaugurated its new, high-performance super-computer at its Scientific and Technical Centre in Pau, France. This places the company in the top ten international companies in terms of computing power.
This machine is 15 times more powerful than its predecessor and is needed to help Total meet the main technical challenges that will confront it as it seeks resources in ever more locations.
Designed by SGI (Silicon Graphics International), the Pangea super-computer has a computing capacity of 2.3 Pflops. It has a power demand of 2.8 megawatts and the heat generated is being recovered to heat the entire science and technology centre at Pau.
