A Norwegian Trade Unions group warned this week that 90 Industri Energi union members at Subsea 7 will go on strike from this month if the firm does not comply with demands for equal pay and working conditions for all its employees. The demands apply only to personnel on multipurpose vessels operating on the Norwegian continental shelf.
A spokesman for national union group LO told Norwegian newspaper Aftenbladet: “We have also stated that we will implement a partial sympathy action. This means that thousands of our members in other companies will be working to rule and refusing to carry out tasks relating to Subsea 7.”
The union added the strike would affect Mongstad Base and Vestbase, which supply food and other basics to 20 major platforms that account for just over a third of the country’s oil production.
Aftenbladet said the disagreement has arisen because the union believes Subsea 7 is employing foreigners and Norwegians through a sister company in Singapore, at different wages and conditions.
