Trade body Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) is launching a UK-wide campaign today to improve public awareness of the industry’s contribution to national life.
The Energising the Nation’s Future drive will look at improving the sector’s image, focusing on the role it plays in innovation, job creation and the broader economy.
OGUK chief executive Malcolm Webb, who will speak at the launch breakfast in Aberdeen, said: “As an industry, we have perhaps not consistently engaged and explained the role that we play.
“We need to improve awareness and recognition of the important value we add to people’s lives.”
Business Secretary Vince Cable has already added his support to the campaign. He said: “The sector generates almost £27billion in revenue alone. Over the coming months we will raise awareness of the industry and illustrate its importance to the UK economy as part of our (the UK Government’s) oil and gas industrial sector strategy.”
The launch at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre features speakers from companies in other industries which have successfully raised their public profile.
Felix Lerch, executive vice-president for production at E.on Exploration and Production, will deliver an oil and gas industry perspective.
E.on recently hosted a television news team for a week on the Babbage platform, so that viewers could see what life was like on a platform in the North Sea.
Mr Lerch said yesterday: “The BBC coverage was a unique opportunity for us to show how technically advanced this industry is and how we as a company contribute to the country’s energy supply and economy.”
