Shell has admitted its gas supply to liquefied natural gas producer Nigeria LNG has been halted after reports of a leak.
The fuel giant halted supply yesterday morning after reports of a leak on the Eastern Gas Gathering System pipeline in Nigeria’s Rivers State.
Some 1.5billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (scf/d) is currently affected.
The firm added it could continue to export about 100-200million scf/d from via the GTS1 pipeline for a limited time, subject to capacity limitations.
Shell claimed “force majeure”, implying that the circumstances of the leak were due to circumstances beyond the firm’s control.
Oil and gas firms in Nigeria have used force majeure before following thefts from pipelines.
