Aberdeen oil and gas consultant Petrex said yesterday it was on track to increase turnover in 2013 and is already making plans for further growth next year.
The firm, which turned over £6million in 2012, is on course to break the £7million mark this year but has already set a £10million target for 2014.
Petrex, formed in 2008, currently employs 25 people onshore and around 20 offshore or on an ad-hoc basis, but a recruitment drive could lead to another 12 joining the business.
Petrex’s John Hunter said part of the firm’s success had been thanks to its design and engineering team, which has taken in £700,000 in the year since its launch.
The engineering design manager said: “We have set our targets but are consistently ahead of them, which has been led by our clients – as we get more work we need to take on more people.
“Going into next year we have projects lined up in subsea as well as supporting dive-support vessels.”
Mr Hunter said he recognised the difficulty the whole industry faced in recruiting new talent, but said Petrex was looking outwith the energy sector for new additions to its workforce.
“The challenge we face, like a lot of larger companies, is finding the people,” he said. We have not been held back by recruitment problems as yet though, because we are doing it a bit differently – the last design engineer we recruited came from a background in domestic products.
“Traditionally oil and gas companies have perhaps thought the best project managers and design engineers are already in the industry and so are trying to recruit from competitors, but that is not the case.”
