Salamander Energy says it has begin work on its exploration programme in the Gulf of Thailand.
The company, which has a 100% interest in the the G4/50 block, plans to drill six exploration wells over the course of the year, with more to follow in 2014.
The block covers more than 5800 square km, with four of the five sub-basins having a proven oil source. Seismic scans have shown more up to 150million barrels of oil could be recoverable from the sites.
The first well, on the Rayong prospect, was spudded today by the Atwood Mako jack-up rig, and is expected to take around 21 days to reach target depth.
