UK independent, Afren, has made what appears to be a promising oil find offshore Nigeria with its first exploration well on the Ogo prospect.
Ogo-1 was drilled to a total measured depth of 3,206m and encountered a gross hydrocarbon section of 160m, with 66m of net stacked pay.
The well was targeting 78million barrels oil equivalent of gross P50 prospective resources, but based on evidence to date, targeted resources are likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates.
Further evaluation using wireline log analysis is currently under way prior to extending the well to almost 3,600m total measured depth in a hunt for further high potential zones.
The Ogo-1 discovery, testing a four-way dip-closed structure in the Turonian, Cenomanian, and Albian sandstone reservoirs, confirms the extension of the same Cretaceous sandstones that have yielded other significant discoveries along the West African Transform Margin.
Following completion of Ogo-1, Afren plans to drill a side-track. Ogo-1 ST will test a new play of stratigraphically trapped sediments that pinch-out on to the basement high targeting 124million barrels of gross P50 prospective resources.
