Austrian energy firm OMV has landed six further exploration licences off Norway as they step up their interest in the Barents Sea.
Two licences are for exploring gas resources in the Vøring Basin’s deepwater area, which will be operated by OMV as 60% stakeholders, along with PGNiG.
The remaining four licences, for the Barents Sea, wil see OMV take 20% stakes along with Statoil, Repsol, RWE and GDF Suez.
“Norway is one of the most important growth regions for OMV as the company focuses on exploration and production,” said OMV’s Jaap Huijskes.
“After this licensing round OMV Norge has now a total of 23 offshore licenses which is a solid basis for the further development of our operations in Norway.”
OMV will carry out exploration drilling this summer in its existing Wisting licence, with the new ones in areas offering follow-up opportunities.
