Premier Oil has abandoned an exploration well off Vietnam after after it showed signs of water.
The well, targeting the Ca Voi prospect of east Vietnam, had reached 3750m and had shown signs of thermogenic gas.
However, despite encountering primary target sands in the well, along with potential source rocks, the sands were found to be water wet.
The company said it would integrate the results of the well with existing seismic data before continuing with exploration in the Phu Khanh Basin.
“121-CV-1X was a frontier exploration well and was the first to test the prospectivity of the Oligocene section in the Phu Khanh Basin,” said chief executive Simon Lockett.
“The presence of deep clastic reservoir rocks and an active petroleum charge in this first wild cat exploration well is encouraging.”
