The go-ahead has been given for exploration drilling at a potential onshore oil find in Leicestershire.
The Burton on the Wolds prospect, which is thought to contain up to 3.8million barrels of oil, will be drilled with a vertical well of 1000m, which will intersect two possible targets on the edge of the structure.
Planning permission has now been given for operator Egdon to begin work on the site, which sits on the edge of the Widmerpool Gulf basin.
Seismic data shows two possible levels, one of which is a shallow sandstone target that is already producing oil at the nearby Rempstone oil field.
“We are pleased that Leicestershire County Council has approved our application for the drilling of the Burton on the Wolds-1 exploration well and we can now look forward to the commencement of drilling operations later in 2013,” said Egdon managing director Mark Abbott.
“The prospect combines a lower risk reservoir target offsetting nearby production with a higher risk, higher potential play which is at present untested in the basin.”
