Gas giant BG Group has made a new gas find after drilling off the Tanzania coast.
Partner firm Ophir, which holds a 40% stake in the block, said the drilling had found a 33m net pay gas reservoir during its drilling at the Mkizi-1 well.
The well, located between the Mzia and Jodari discoveries, was found to be in excellent quality, with estimates of around 0.6trillion CF of gas reserves.
The Deepsea Metro 1 ship, which drilled the well, will now move on to drill two appraisal wells on the Pweza discovery elsewhere in the region.
“The successful Mkizi-1 well is our ninth discovery in Tanzania and continues our 100% strike rate in country, adding further resource to our existing discoveries in Block 1,” said Ophir chief executive Nick Cooper.
“Appraisal of Pweza will look to further underpin volumes in Block 4 which were upgraded with the recent success of the Ngisi drilling programme, whilst the DST is the final stage in firming up the commerciality of the resource across the Chewa-Pweza-Ngisi hub.”
