Iran’s biggest tanker company says it increased its supertanker fleet by 23% this year despite international nuclear sanctions on oil exports in the country.
The seven large crude carriers, each at a 2million barrels of oil capacity, raise the number of NITC’s supertanker fleet to 37 and bring its entire transport capacity to 86million barrels of oil – equivalent of 65 days of Iran’s exports.
The sanctions from July 2012 prevent most European Union tankers from transporting Iranian crude in order to limit the country’s potential for nuclear weapon production.
Last year Iran’s exports fell 48% to 66 million tons, at a revenue cut of 38% to $52.7 billion (£34billion), according to data from the International Trade Centre.
