China’s National Offshore Oil Corporation has been given the go-ahead to build the country’s first floating terminal for liquefied natural gas.
The first phase of the £350million project will be able to receive 2.2million tonnes a year, claim CNOOC.
“Compared with a normal LNG terminal, the floating LNG terminal in Tianjin can realise rapid LNG supply, shortening the construction period by three to four years,” said CNOOC.
The second phase of the project will involve building an onshore LNG terminal of at least 6million tonne capacity.

China recorded and increase of 25% in its LNG imports in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2012.
The country currently operates six LNG terminals with a dozen more approved for construction to meet its growing domestic demand.
The combined expected capacity of these terminals would exceed 80million tonnes per year.
