Statoil has made a gas find at the Smørbukk North prospect in the Norwegian North Sea’s Asgard field.
Drilling by the Transocean Leader discovered a 40m column of gas/condensate in the Garn formation at the Haltenbanken site.
Further drilling found another, thinner column deeper in the well.
“We are very pleased with having proven the new resources,” Statoil exploration vice president says Gro Haatvedt.
“The three discoveries comprising the Åsgard field were all made in the 1980s. Making a new discovery in the area 30 years later is encouraging and proves the exciting remaining potential on the NCS.”
Preliminary estimates suggest between 25million and 47million boe.
Statoil is operator of the field, with a 40.95% interest, along with ENI Norge, Petoro, ExxonMobil and Total.
