Total has struck a significant oil find after drilling a wildcat well off the coast of Gabon.
The Diaman 1B well, off the African country’s coast, discovered around 160-180ft of hydrocarbons in the pre-salt formations.
The find, more than 100km from the nearest commercial discovery, was the first test in the Gabon deepwater region and came after the well was drilled to 5585m.
Drilling partners Cobalt said today the well would now be temporarily abandoned why commercial analysis was carried out, although early indications were of gas with condensate at the site.
“The Diaman #1 well results represent an excellent start to the exploration of the emerging Pre-salt basin in deepwater Gabon,” said Cobalt chief executive James Farnsworth.
“This discovery is a culmination of a five-year exploration program in which we and our partners have been successful in identifying and testing the initial phase of Gabon’s pre-salt potential. Combined with Cobalt’s deepwater pre-salt position in offshore Angola, this offshore discovery further deepens our understanding of the West Africa pre-salt margin.”
