Statoil has spudded its Snilehorn exploration well in the Norwegian Sea.
The well and a planned sidetrack are targeting oil and gas along similar formations to those in the neighbouring Hyme field.
Project partner Faroe Petroleum confirmed work had started on the well, which is being drilled to around 3205m in a water depth of 282m using the Songa Trym rig.
“We are pleased to announce the spudding of the Snilehorn exploration well, the first of our six well programme which, if successful, offers an opportunity to add new production at a low cost through a fast-track tie-back to the nearby Hyme field,” said Faroe chief executive Graham Stewart.
The Hyme field came on stream in February this year, and is believed to contain around 30million barrels of oil equivalent.
