Energy service firm Aker Solutions has secured the contract for the first phase of decommissioning the Murchison platform in the North Sea.
The three-year deal is expected to lead to 150 jobs in Aberdeen, among 400 new roles Aker announced last month.
Financial details of the contract, awarded by CNR International (UK), were not disclosed.
The Murchison field lies in UK block 211/19 and extends into the Norwegian block 33/9 in the northern North Sea, about 93 miles north-east of Shetland.
Commissioned in 1980, the platform has produced more than 390million barrels of oil equivalent.
Norway-based Aker will manage the engineering design, procurement and offshore execution for work to prepare the facilities for removal.
Mike Forbes, managing director of Aker’s maintenance, modifications and operations business in the UK, said: “Decommissioning will be a key area of focus for the UK oil and gas industry over the next couple of decades as we see a growing number of historic oil and gas installations taken out of service.
