UK business secretary Vince Cable will give the keynote speech at an event to close Oil & Gas UK’s energy industry awareness campaign next week.
The industry body’s Energising the Nation’s Future has been running since April in a bid to highlight the innovation, economic contribution and creation of skilled oil and gas jobs.
The final debate of the campaign on October 15 – Innovation Nation – will look into the importance of business innovation in energy to the UK’s economic future.
Cable will open the event before joining the discussion panel, hosted by broadcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy.
Trevor Baylis, inventor of the wind-up radio; Richard Noble, Scottish entrepreneur and former land speed record holder; and Trevor Garlick, head of BP’s North Sea operations will also feature on the panel.
“Oil & Gas UK launched ‘Energising the Nation’s Future’ to showcase the industry’s contribution and importance to the UK economy, innovation and skilled job creation,” said Malcolm Webb, chief executive of Oil & Gas UK.
“As a result, we’ve heard from everyone from former Formula One engineers, apprentices beginning their careers, through to veteran CEOs. They’ve all been united in their pride for the work they do and the fantastic contribution that the industry makes to the UK.
“This phase of the campaign concludes with ‘Innovation Nation’ and features a panel that firmly believes innovation is fundamental to the UK economy, jobs and competitiveness.”
