Video: Offshore workers ‘aren’t exactly basking in sunshine’
A video has circulated on social media of snow coating an oil rig in the North Sea.
As Aberdeen grapples with the wintry weather and all that comes with it the LinkedIn post shows the conditions offshore workers deal with as snow hits the north-east.
Thick layers of snow are shown to have coated every surface on the outside of the offshore intillation as the blizzard continues to throw arctic weather at the installation.
The person behind the post wrote: “Whilst complaining it was a tad chilly this morning, we got a timely reminder that our offshore teams aren’t exactly basking in sunshine.”
The post has since been taken down but before it was the video amassed nearly 500 reactions.
It can get ‘arctic out there’
In the comments below the post, people were sharing their experiences of winter in the North Sea.
One LinkedIn user wrote: “Can get pretty arctic out there in the winter, and the wind chill on top makes it treacherous.
“Catering crew will be working overtime to keep the tea and coffee flowing to keep everyone warm!”
Another commenter said that he’d never seen snow like what the video shows after working in the North Sea from 1987 to 2006 at which point he was told he “must have been in bed all day” as that level of snowfall is common.
This comes as 30 helicopter flights were been either cancelled or delayed at Aberdeen and Sumburgh, Shetland as a result of the freezing conditions and snowfall.
