Scots oil firm Cairn Energy has begin drilling on its latest wildcat well off the coast of Morocco.
The exploration well on the Foum Draa block, which is being drilled by the Cajun Express semi-submersible unit, will take around 60 days to complete.
The work is part of a multi-well exploration sequence planned off the coast, and comes after Cairn announced it had farmed into a further block in the Cap Boujdour off the country.
The deal, which will see Cairn take a 20% stake in the prospect from Kosmos and Morocco’s national oil company, is 50km off the coast and covers a 27,700km2 region of the Aaiun Basin.
“The new acreage offers transformational exploration potential in a frontier region where Cairn is already well established,” said Cairn chief executive Simon Thomson.
“We are delighted to be working with Kosmos who are a proven and valuable operating partner with a track record of exploration success in similar play types along the West African margin.”
