Heritage Oil non-executive director General Sir Michael Wilkes has died aged 73.
Sir Michael had been a non-executive director of the independent upstream exploration firm since it was listed on the stock market in 2008.
Prior to that, he served in the British Army for 35 years, retiring in 1995 as the most senior administrative officer within the army – the Adjutant General and Middle East Adviser to the UK Government.
Sir Michael’s military career included commanding the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment and serving as the Director of Special Forces. On leaving the army in 1995 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of Jersey, where he served until retiring in 2000.
“We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of General Sir Michael Wilkes who was a tremendous asset to our company,” said CEO Tony Buckingham.
“Sir Michael was an honourable man with a highly distinguished military career and will be remembered as a man of the highest integrity. On behalf of the board and our staff, we extend our condolences to his wife and children.”
As well as being senior independent director at Heritage Oil, Sir Michael was a member of the company’s audit, remuneration, nomination and anti-bribery and corruption committees.
The nomination committee now plans to appoint a new non-executive director and the company will carry out a review of committee membership. In addition, a new candidate will be sought for the role of senior independent director.
