North Sea operator Lundin has been given a major boost to its hopes for the giant Johan Sverdrup field after its latest well turned up a larger than expected oil column.
The well, at the south-eastern edge of the field, was drilled to just over 2000m below sea level by the Bredford Dolphin rig.
The reservoir discovered was 50m deep, more than had been previously expected, with 14m of excellent sandstone and 36m of good dolomitic carbonates, with oil and water contact showing that the well was on the edge of the field’s dimensions.
