Lundin Petroleum is to drill a sidetrack at its Torvastad prospect in the North Sea as it looks to establish whether the field is connected to the giant Johan Sverdrup discovery.
The company drilled a well north of the Sverdrup discovery in a hunt for oil, finding a poor lower Cretaceous sequence above an excellent upper Jurassic one.
As the sandstone sequence appears to be similar to those found on the Sverdrup field, Lundin is to drill a sidetrack well to hunt for an oil water contact.
Drilling by the Island Innovator is expected to take 20 days.
Meanwhile Total has been given the go-ahead for a new wildcat well on its Norwegian North Sea permit.
The Leif Eiriksson rig will drill the well on block 25/5 in the central North Sea, the first exploration well to be drilled in the area.
