Bristow is to provide air support for BP’s giant West of Shetland oil projects after securing a £125million deal with the oil giant.
The helicopter firm has won a five-year deal from July 2015 to provide helicopter services to BP’s Clair Ridge and Schiehallion projects as the company ramps up the number of staff working off Shetland.
Bristow said today the deal would see two Sikorsky S-92 helicopters based at Sumburgh Airport on Shetland as part of the contract.
“We look forward to operating a safe efficient service supporting BP’s offshore requirements from Sumburgh,” said Bristow director of operations Mike Imlach.
“This contract also will grow our presence in Shetland, where we already provide Search & Rescue services to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency from Sumburgh Airport, and offshore helicopter services to the Integrated Aviation Consortium from Scatsta Airport.”
A spokeswoman for the firm said a number of airport support roles would be created as the start date for the contract neared.
BP has already agreed deals worth more than £1billion for the massive Quad 204 project to redevelop the Schiehallion and Loyal oil fields, around 175km west of Shetland.
The £3billion redevelopment project, along with the £4.5billion Clair Ridge project, will see the oil giant and its partners developing oil from the West of Shetland fields for the next half-century.
“BP’s major investment programme in the Shetland region will see a significant increase in personnel working offshore, especially on the Clair Ridge and Schiehallion developments,” said BP’s infrastructure manager Mark Hardie
“We look forward to working with Bristow to deliver a safe and efficient service for passengers. The contract is good news for Shetland and will provide jobs and an enhanced base at Sumburgh airport to support future developments.”
