The first gas from the Queensland Curtis LNG project in Australia has been delivered, operator BG Group has announced.
The gas giant confirmed the first gas had been transported from the Surat Basin goal seam field to the liquefaction terminal on Curtis Island – three years after the project was commissioned.
Now work will begin early next year on the first of two LNG production trains for the $20billion Queensland gas project.
“To have first gas on Curtis Island in a little over three years from project sanction is an immense achievement,” said BG Group chief executive Chris Finlayson.
The QCLNG project has seen a 540km buried gas pipeline network being created in two years, linking the gas fields across the state to the Gladstone processing terminal.
“Delivering this key milestone demonstrates the advanced stage of development at the world’s first coal seam gas to LNG project,” said Finlayson.
“We have overcome many challenges along the way, and we still have more hard work in front of us, but last February I set the tough target to have first gas on Curtis Island by the end of this year, and I am delighted that we have met it.”
