Production has begun from the cross-border Orca gas field, GDF Suez has announced.
The field, which straddles the UK and Dutch North Sea sectors, has produced first gas after start-up on one of three wells drilled by the D18a-A platform.
A second well is due to come onstream later this month, with a third currently being drilled ahead of production next February.
The platform will produce 1.5million cubic metres of gas per day, which is being piped to Uithuizen in the Netherlands.
“It has taken less than two years from partner approval to first gas production from Orca,” said GDF Suez gas boss Jean-Marie Daughter.
“With first gas from Juliet, also in the Southern North Sea, expected before the end of the year, GDF SUEZ E&P is demonstrating the potential of the North Sea as a mature region”.
The field is one of only two, along with Markham, to sit on the border between the two territories.
