An unprotected oil pipeline in Yemeni city Marib has been attacked by tribesmen – for the third time in one week.
In the three incidents – the other two on Saturday and Thursday – the tribesmen used explosives to damage the pipeline and stop all oil flow to the Ras Issa station in Hodeida—where the oil is prepared for export.
Repairs of the pipeline can be completed in three days following talks with the tribes, which are underway, said local government officials.
Yemeni tribesmen are said to attack state infrastructure to pressure the government into providing them with jobs or freeing relatives from prison.
According to Hussein Nasser, the state’s deputy officer for oil in Marib, about 90,000 barrels of oil pass through the pipeline every day.
Officials at the Oil and Minerals Ministry say Yemen lost $4.8 billion in oil revenues between March 2011 and March 2013 as a result of repeated attacks.
