Drilling work has begun on the Butch East North Sea well as Centrica looks to build on the success of its 2011 find.
Appraisal work is already under way on the 2011 Butch find, which is thought to contain up to 60million barrels of oil equivalent.
Now the company and its partners in the field hope to extend the discovery further, with the first of two back-to-back wells on the Norwegian North Sea licence.
Spudding of the exploration well, close to the giant Ula field, comes after new seismic analysis of the structure, revealed partner Faroe Petroleum.
“If successful, Butch East offers the potential to substantially add to the value of the Butch field,” said Faroe chief executive Graham Stewart.”
Work is being carried out using the Maersk Giant rig, ahead of a development plan being confirmed for the main Butch discovery.
