North Sea operator Wintershall says it is closing on plans for the Skarfjell oil find after completing the final well in its appraisal of the site.
The field, which is now thought to also contain more than 8billion cubic metres of gas, is estimated to contain between 63 and 160million barrels of oil.
Drilling work on the final appraisal wells of the discovery, around 40km north of the Troll field in the Norwegian North Sea, is now being wrapped up by the Transocean Arctic as the German firm as it begins to appras
“This is likely the last well in the Skarfjell appraisal campaign,” said Wintershall’s managing director Bernd Schrimpf.
“We are now in a position to begin evaluating a possible development. As a fully integrated crude oil and natural gas producer in Norway, Wintershall will apply the expertise gained in current development projects such as Maria, to the development of Skarfjell.”
Among the options for the project are a standalone development, or a tieback to the nearby Gjøa platform along with other discoveries in the region.
“The reservoir quality exceeds our expectations and it appears we now have a connected continuous hydrocarbon accumulation in the north and southwest with very good reservoir quality,” said exploration manager Guy Oakes.
