Drydocks World of Dubai has struck a deal with Drill One Capital for building the “Dubai Expo 2020 NS” mega-jack-up drilling rig.
Gusto MSC, which is one of DW’s major partners in this project, has designed the CJ 80 class rig to be the largest jack-up yet conceived.
It has been designed to be operated in harsh environments including the Norwegian Sector of the North Sea at a maximum water-depth of 175m with an ample 25m air-gap.
This newest DW rig project is a measure of the determination with which the UAE and Dubai in particular are pursuing cutting-edge projects that push the frontiers of oilfield technology.
Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of Drydocks World & Maritime World, has claimed that the CJ 80 jack-up was a “green rig” that would take the industry to “a new level”.
“It is a demonstration of DDW capability to build world-first mega projects as we demonstrated in previous projects such as ‘The Shell Prelude FLNG turret, Solan storage tank and DolWin beta’, and now building this global first and largest (jack-up) rig,” said Buamim.
“It is a testament from the offshore industry on the DDW capability to deliver and puts us into the lead and the yard of choice,” he boasted.
“We seek to develop our capabilities in building highly specialised units for the offshore oil & gas sectors and are gearing up for more innovative and technology-intensive projects that would serve the emerging needs of the energy sector.”
The 101m by 110m, 5,500sq m unit will be classed by DNV and comply with all current rules and regulations in force in the Norwegian and the UK sector of the North Sea.
The rig is claimed to be “totally environmentally friendly” . . . up to 30% less fuel consumption due to use of latest fuel efficient technology.
Other features are to include:
- Freshwater manufacturer using waste heat from engine cooling;
- Central heating by hot water generated from exhaust waste heat;
- LED lighting where possible;
- Reduced emission of CO2 and Nox – up to 25% reduction in emission compared to similar rigs;
- Shore power plug-in facility;
- Zero discharge to sea to meet Norwegian and UK legal requirements (fluids less than 15ppm contamination).
The designed pontoon draft is 8.5m, minimum operational water depth is 20m and length of the jacking legs is 232m.
It is designed to accommodate a total of 160 persons and to be capable of both drilling and being used for oil and gas production. It will be capable of drilling wells to 12,000 (40,000m) depth.
