Women aspiring for executive positions in the energy sector should seek a mentor that will drive them to push against the obstacles, believes the managing director at Aberdeen Airport.
The former oil and gas accountant – turned MD Carol Benzie told Energy Voice that female executives do not require superpowers to enter the boardroom, as they bring an extra dimension to the table and often can do a better job than men.
“We don’t have to be perfect to be in a leadership position,” Benzie said.
“We can admit the idiosyncrasies and admit the challenges that we face.
“The empathy, the understanding of emotions behind things [that women bring in] – given that energy, I think we can do a lot better than men can.”
Speaking at the Aberdeen and Grampian Chambers of Commerce (AGCC) event Women Mean Business, Benzie also urged aspiring women in the energy sector to push themselves pass their normal limits and seek support of a mentor to help them achieve their career goals.
“If you’re presented with a challenge, don’t turn it down. Be prepared to take that extra step, to push yourself into that uncomfortable position that in you’re head you’re questioning: ‘Can I do this?’ but once you’ve achieved it, you’ll look back and feel so proud of yourself.”
