Oil major Total has hailed a new find off the Ivory Coast as ‘very promising’ after opening up a new prospect.
The Saphir-1XB well marks the first discovery in the San Pedro basin, which Total operates along with partners CNR International and Petroci.
The find, of around 40 metres of net pay, was made after drilling to a depth of 4655m.
Now the company is analysing data from the drilling to see what it could mean for planned wells on neighbouring sites, as it looks to open up another prospect off the oil-rich country.
“This first well is the first discovery in the San Pedro Basin, a frontier exploration area in Ivory Coast,” said Total exploration vice president Marc Blaizot
“Having confirmed the presence of a petroleum system containing light oil, we will next evaluate this very promising find and focus on its extension to the north and east.”
The company said it was looking to drill two further wells in the area by the end of the year as it seeks to determine the full potential of the region.
