Caribbean-focused explorer Leni Gas and Oil has been given the go-ahead to begin drilling the first new well in the Gourdron oil field for 30 years.
The Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs issued its stamp of approval, paving the way for rig mobilisation for the Trinidad field.
The first well is expected to spud after the Easter holiday.
Chief executive Neil Ritson said: “After careful planning we are ready to commence the drilling of the first of many infill development wells at Goudron.
“We are especially grateful for the support we have received in this process from Petrotrin. The use of modern drilling equipment and techniques are expected to contribute significantly to the potential flow rates that new wells can achieve.
“We are naturally very excited to have reached this point and look forward to announcing results as they are available.”
The facilities, including the surrounding access roads, have all been upgraded in anticipation of the mobilisation.
Production is not expected to be affected with approximately 70 reactivated wells contributing to on-going production.
This would be the first new well in the field since 1981.
Leni Gas and Oil is targeting sandstone intervals at a depth of 2,800ft sub-sea. It is then due to deepen exploration to ensure all potentially productive horizons are intersected.
