Gas to power firm Gasol has struck a deal with African Power Generation to provide extra gas for Ghana in a bid to solve the country’s energy problems.
The joint venture will see the firms looking at developing a new liquefied natural gas project in the country, with facilities to supply regasified LNG to power plants and other users.
The scheme will be independent of the West African Gas Pipeline once up and running, selling and marketing gas from Gasol’s import project in Benin in a bid to address the country’s deficit.
“We are very pleased that, following on from the MoU signed between Ghana Gas and AfGen last year, AfGen has now moved on with a formal agreement which envisages the incorporation of a joint venture company,” said Gasol chief operating officer Alan Buxton.
“The arrangements signal progress on two fronts, both in delivering a dedicated solution for Ghana and prior to the implementation of that solution, the sale and marketing of regasified LNG in Ghana from our planned Benin LNG import project.”
The scheme is expected to sell into the country a minimum of 100million standard cubic feet of gas per day for at least five years.
