Schlumberger has unveiled new reservoir mapping-while-drilling technology.
GeoSphere is aimed at eliminating pilot holes ultimately saving millions of pounds in offshore exploration costs.
The technology uses directional electromagnetic measurements to illustrate subsurface bedding and fluid contacts more than 100ft from the wellbore.
The information can then be used to adjust field development plans.
In the North Sea, the technology was deployed to detect the top of a reservoir target from 50ft away.
“With GeoSphere technology, Schlumberger is introducing the first-ever reservoir mapping-while-drilling service that enables customers to map their reservoirs using unprecedented depth of investigation measurements around the wellbore combined with a novel mathematical inversion methodology,” said Steve Kaufmann, president of drilling and measurements for Schlumberger.
The technology has been used in 140 wells worldwide, including locations in North America, South America, Europe, Middle East, Russia and Australia.
