The Centrica-operated Butch South West well in the Norwegian North Sea has been spudded, licence shareholder Faroe Petroleum today confirmed.
The 8/10-6S well is adjacent to the firm’s 2011 Butch discovery and close to existing infrastructure of the Ula, Tambar and Gyda fields.
In addition to drilling the Butch South West well, Centrica is currently working on a development plan for the Butch Main discovery, which holds up to an estimated 60 million barrels of oil equivalent.
“We are pleased to announce the spudding of the Butch South West exploration well which, if successful, offers the potential to add substantially to the volumes and value of the Butch field, as the adjacent Butch Main field is already on track for near-term development,” said Graham Stewart, Faroe Petroleum chief executive.
The development is a joint venture between operator Centrica (40% interest) and Faroe (15%), Suncor (30%) and Tullow Oil (15%).
