Offshore drilling firm Seadrill has secured a $1.1billion contract with Total for the French giant’s ultra-deep offshore Egina project in Nigeria.
The five year deal includes the deployment of ultra-deepwater drillship West Jupiter, due for delivery from the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, in August this year.
The ship’s rig will be outfitted to work in up to 10,000 feet of water and will be capable of drilling depths up to 37,500 feet.
It is one of eight 6th generation drillship currently under construction for Seadrill and is expected for delivery in August this year. The firm’s consolidated backlog currently stands at $20billion.
“This contract provides an opportunity to deepen our relationship with a key customer and strategically increase our rig fleet in Nigeria, adding the West Jupiter alongside the West Capella which has been operating in the Usan field Offshore Nigeria since 2008,” said Per Wullf, Seadrill chief executive.
