Statoil has terminated its rig contract with Diamond Offshore drilling over a ‘technical aspect of the rig’.
The Norwegian operator severed ties eight months ahead of schedule.
The Ocean Vanguard rig was due to remain under contract until February at a day rate of $454,000.
However, a Statoil spokesman confirmed the exploration firm had cancelled the terms of the contract.
“We confirm that we have terminated the contract with Diamond Offshore. The termination is due to technical aspects of the rig,” communication manager Oerjan Heradstveit said.
“The contract was valid until February 2015. Apart from this, we don’t want to comment any further.”
Heradstveit cited confidentiality issues for the short response.
Prior to the cancellation, the Ocean Vanguard was due to drill a well in the UK before returning to its Norwegian base.
