Initial exploration on the Tarfaya block, offshore Morocco, has found no hydrocarbons, shareholder Tangiers Petroleum reported.
Tao-1 – the first exploration well in the licence, spudded in late June this year -intersected the shallow and secondary objective of the prospect, Assaka, where no hydrocarbon shows were found.
A full evaluation of the objective will take place when the well reaches the section’s total depth, as the drilling continues.
The company is targeting the primary and largest objective in the licence, Trident, estimated to hold 423 million barrels of recoverable oil at a 50% probability of being produced (P50).
Tao-1 is set test the Trident prospect which Tangiers says is “not co-dependent” on the results from Assaka.
The company holds a 25% participating interest in the Tarfaya Offshore block, which is being operated by Galp Energia with a 50%. The remaining 25% is owned Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), which is carried through the exploration phase.
