Energy giant BG Group is facing a staff walkout at its Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Curtis Island in Queensland.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) – one of the four unions representing workers at the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) – has handed notice of a planned industrial action for August 7 to plant contractors Bechtel Group.
The announcement followed BG publishing its second quarter results, which showed a 23% increase in earnings on the previous year.
“BG Group is not aware of the scope or duration of this proposed industrial action from this particular union body,” the company said in a statement.
It added that it did not expect the action would delay the launch of the QCLNG, planned for the fourth quarter of the year.
BG is hoping the LNG plant will help it to offset some lost fuel cargos from Egypt after gas was diverted to the local market from exports.
