Baker Hughes Inc. is now disclosing all of the chemicals used in the hydraulic fracturing process used in oil and gas production while keeping trade secrets secret, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The Houston-based oilfield-services company said that beginning immediately it will provide a list of all chemical components of a product in any well where fracturing takes place, and the information will be found on the national hydraulic fracturing chemical registry, www.fracFocus.org, according to the Post-Gazette.
While this disclosure will include the maximum concentrations of any ingredient, the company will not reveal the formulations of any product, retaining that as a trade secret, the newspaper reported.
Derek Mathieson, the company’s chief strategy officer, said Baker Hughes is making the move to introduce greater transparency about the chemicals used in the fracturing process.
