The UK’s Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has awarded a contract to Mott MacDonald in support of a new research project to identify the characteristics of alternative small-scale thermal and nuclear plant power generation technologies.
The purpose is to capture the high level technical performance characteristics and business-case parameters of small thermal plants, which could be of value to the potential future of the UK’s energy system.
The £200,000 project, expected to be completed by December, is intended to include small modular reactors, enabling comparison with other small-scale plant, such as those powered by bio-mass.
ETI says the project outputs will help enable the subsequent contrast of a range of specific technologies. From what Energy can gather, most of the systems would have to be sourced overseas.
