Heerema-AF Consortium has been awarded a contract to assist with the decommissioning of a North Sea platform.
CNR International (CNRI) has signed a contract with the company for the removal and disposal of the Murchison platform.
The oil field straddles the UK/Norway media line and is situated east of the Shetland Islands on the UK continental shelf.
It ended production in February this year, after first being installed in 1980 as one of the largest steel jacket platforms.
The award covers a major contract for engineering, preparation, removal and disposal (EPRD) of the topsides and jacket structure which weigh 37,000 tonnes.
Engineering work will begin this year and offshore work will also commence in early 2016, while the removal and full disposal of work will continue until 2020.
The Heerema-AF Consortium – comprises Heerema Marine Contractors Nederland SE and AF Decom Offshore UK Limited.
The company has created an innovative hybrid removal methodology which consists of piece-small removal and heavy lift reverse installation.
Murchison will remain manned for an additional year to support the consortium’s offshore deconstruction and removal activities.
CNRI’s decommissioning project manager Roy Aspden said: “I’m excited by the combination of world class skills brought by Heerema AF consortium to deliver safe, efficient removal and disposal of the Murchison facilities.”
Over its life, the Murchison field produced around 400 million barrels.
