Statoil’s wildcat well drilled northeast of Johan Castberg has returned a viable gas find.
The well, located in the Barents Sea, encountered a gas column of about 85 meters in the Stø and Nordmela formations. Initial reservoir quality was deemed to range from very good to excellent.
Early estimations calculate there to be between one and two billion standard cubic meters (Sm3) of recoverable gas in the find.
The well was the first to be drilled under production licence 714, which was issued in the 22nd licensing round last year.
It was drilled to a vertical depth of 1554 meters below the sea surface.
