Exxon Mobil’s newest tanker has created more than 1,000 jobs since its inception.
The second of the Texas-based firm’s vessels was christened Eagle Bay at a ceremony at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard yesterday.
The company said that the crude oil supplier incorporates the latest safety, navigation and engine room technologies and will start delivering from Alsaka North Slope to refineries on the US coast this year.
Andy Madden, vice president, added: “This project has had a significant economic impact, creating more than 1,200 jobs and generating millions of dollars in revenue for the city of Philadelphia, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and beyond.
“The state is benefiting from increased demand for steel and other products that support oil and gas development as well as new manufacturing industries made possible by abundant supplies of affordable energy.”
The double hull Eagle Bay is 820-feet long and has capacity to carry 800,000 barrels of oil.
The ship’s main engine and auxiliary systems will be energy efficient and generate lower air emissions than required by regulatory standards.
