The energy jobs taskforce will implement a “co-ordinated” response to help workers about to lose their jobs at BP and other companies, according to the first minister.
Nicola Sturgeon said the taskforce, which she announced on Wednesday’s visit to Aberdeen, will decide how to address specific circumstances and will liaise with companies and individual employees to see what practical advice and help is needed.
“The taskforce will have a role in matching skills requirements to market demand, and will encourage the industry subsectors to collaborate to ensure that core transferable skills are retained here in Scotland,” she said.
She was responding to concerns from Aberdeen MSP Mark McDonald over the job losses at BP and possibly at Premier Oil, both of which are in his constituency.
“The announcement that jobs are to go will be worrying for staff at BP and their families and it is essential those affected are fully supported,” he said. “To that end, I welcome the announcement from the first minister that the Scottish Government is creating an energy jobs taskforce and has provided assurances that the Scottish Government is taking all measures it can.
“As an MSP representing many of those affected, it is a top priority of mine to ensure everything is done at all levels to safeguard jobs.”
