Baker Hughes said its international rig count for the month of July was down by 264 from the same time last year.
The figures also dropped by 28 from the previous month of June.
The company said the international offshore rig count for July was down 13 from the 277 last month and down 72 from the 336 counted in July 2014.
However the average US rig count for July 2015 was 866, up five from the 861 counted in June last year.
But year on year the numbers were 866 lower than in July 2014.
The worldwide rig count for July 2015 was 2,167, up 31 from the 2,136 counted in June 2015, and down 1,441 from the 3,608 counted in July 2014.
