Africa could become a significant global market for imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2025, according to a senior official at Total.
The continent is said to be turning increasingly to LNG as a source of global power.
Tom Earl, vice president of Total, said: “It could be collectively a 20 to 30 million tonnes per year market by 2025.
“Africa really is going to take a central role, the projects may be typically of smaller scale, but nevertheless they will collectively be very important.”
He said Egypt could be the main driver behind the plans and could end up importing between 15million and 20million tonnes annually within a decade.
West Africa is also seen as importing five million tonnes a year, South Africa four million and Morocco two million tonnes.
